Applications Closing Soon for the European Capitals of Tourism 2027 Awards

On behalf of the European Commission, DG MOVE, cities and destinations are invited to apply for the European Capitals of Tourism 2027 awards. The applications close in one month, on 12 June 2026 at 17:00 CEST. The competition is open to all EU countries and non-EU countries that are part of the Single Market Programme (SMP).
Destinations can apply in two distinct categories:
- Category 1: Cities over 100,000 inhabitants: recognising excellence across sustainability, accessibility, digitalisation and cultural heritage and creativity.
- Category 2: Destinations with 25,000 to 100,000 inhabitants: recognising smaller destinations leading in sustainable tourism through green transition practices.
Please note: The European Capitals of Tourism are the continuation of the former European Capital and Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism. The name has been changed in line with the upcoming EU Strategy for Sustainable Tourism, however, the rules and prizes of the award remain the same.
What’s in it for the winner cities?
- Visibility and recognition across the EU.
- Tailored communication and branding support.
- Networking opportunities and presence at international tourism events.
- A chance to share best practices and join a network of leading destinations.
Winning the award is a great way to increase visibility and position not only the city as an innovative tourism capital, but also raise the profile of the whole country.
All information about the application process can be found on the official website: https://smart-tourism-capital.ec.europa.eu/about_en. In case of questions, cities can reach out directly via email at: info@smarttourismcapital.eu.
